Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith put on a 43-run stand for the fifth wicket to give momentum to Australia's tricky chase.

The ninth wicket stand which lasted 29.4 overs came to an end when Peter Nevill edged a cut to the wicketkeeper. The partnership between Nevill and Steve O'Keefe yielded only four runs and had only one scoring shot, but it did enough to frustrate the Sri Lankan bowlers.

Steve O'Keefe, who suffered an injury on his right hamstring, came out to bat in the second innings and offered strong resistance with a 98-ball 4.

Sri Lanka took command of the contest with three quick wickets towards the end of the first session, reducing Australia to 141 for 7. Nathan Lyon (above) departed soon after the second session got underway.

Australia began Day 5 cautiously. Steve Smith, who was unbeaten overnight, went on to make a half-century. It was only the second 50-plus score of the match

Sri Lanka won the first Test by 106 runs. It was their second win against Australia in Test cricket.
