15 minutes before Tea, Mohammed Shami injured himself while on his run-up, and was taken back to the pavilion after a brief check-up by the physio.

Moeen Ali provided able support to Joe Root with a fine half century. Along with Root, he put on a century-stand (179 runs) for the fourth wicket and seize the command of the contest. He finished the day unbeaten on 99.

England scored over 100 runs in all the three sessions on the opening day as they reached 311 for 4 at Stumps.

Indian players await the third umpire's decision for a caught and bowled appeal. As it turned out, Joe Root was declared out off Umesh Yadav.
