Nicholls and Latham then played out the entire first session to take the team to 403 for 3 at Lunch.

Nicholls registered his half-century in the second session.

Sri Lanka made a mini comeback when they dismissed Nicholls and BJ Watling in quick succession.

Tom Latham scored his maiden double ton as New Zealand went to Tea at 509 for 6.

Latham stayed unbeaten on 264 as New Zealand were all out for 578.

Southee picked up two wickets late in the day as Sri Lanka slipped to 20 for 3 by stumps.
