After losing the toss and being put into bat, Jason Roy, as is the norm, wasted no time and got off to a flying start
Roy's demise was brought about my debutant JJ Smuts - a wicket that triggered a dramatic collapse
Tabraiz Shamsi was the wrecker-in-chief, ravaging through the English middle-order to reduce them from 51/0 to 131/6
Shamsi's brilliance was aided by some brilliant fielding by Rassie van der Dussen, who caught Root short with a direct-hit
And then, England's long tail showed itself: Woakes and Denly settled in for tea and supper, rescuing England from a ditch
After Woakes departed for 40, Denly upped the ante post his half-century
Denly was only dismissed two balls into the final over, 13 short of a well-deserved hundred, lifting England to 258-8
Woakes struck early, getting one to kick and nicking off Reeza Hendricks
And that was the end of England's joy: Quinton de Kock and Bavuma settled in for 173 runs off 169 balls, all but sealing South Africa's chase...
de Kock, on captaincy debut, went past 5000 runs en route to a magical hundred
Temba Bavuma, unfortunately, fell agonisingly short of a well-deserved hundred
JJ Smuts and van der Dussen wrapped it up, bringing a smile of relief to the dressing room and to the rainbow nation by extension, as South Africa went 1-0 up at Newlands
