Nathan Lyon, Australia's second-highest Test wicket-taker, came off the field at the Adelaide Oval, clutching his right hamstring while fielding in the first session of Day 5 of the third Ashes Test.

On the last ball of the 77th over, Jamie Smith pulled a delivery towards the fine-leg boundary and Lyon, the fielder stationed there, was late to pick it up. The offspinner managed to stop the ball with a dive but immediately limped off the field and called for the physio.

Lyon was seen leaving the ground before the Lunch break to visit hospital for a scan, with an Australian team spokesperson confirming he won't take further part in the match.

The injury brought back memories of his calf injury at Lord's in 2023 which ruled the 38-year-old out of the following three Tests of the series which subsequently ended level.

Lyon, on Day 2, had surpassed Glenn McGrath's record of 563 wickets with the wickets of Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett in the first innings, and followed it up with three crucial middle-order wickets in the second innings as well. In a magical spell late on Day 4, he dismissed Harry Brook, Ben Stokes and Zak Crawley to put Australia in control of the Test.
