A four-wicket haul from Chris Jordan and a rapid half-century from Nikhil Chaudhary blew Melbourne Renegades away in Geelong as Hobart Hurricanes picked up an impressive win. Renegades were restricted to just 145/9 following Jordan's four-fer and Chaudhary then blazed his way to a 38-ball 79 as Hurricanes got the job done easily with 37 balls to spare.
The defending champions decided to bowl first after winning the toss and the decision was vindicated when Josh Brown was sent packing for an eight-ball duck. However, Tim Seifert went on the offensive and smashed plenty of boundaries to immediately put Hurricanes on the backfoot. As a result, Renegades raced to 36/1 after four overs with Seifert looking in ominous touch and Mohammad Rizwan getting off to a decent start as well.
However, the slide began when Jordan clean bowled Seifert with a yorker which was then followed by Rizwan losing his stumps to Rehan Ahmed in the following over. The double strike derailed the momentum as Hurricanes slowly took command of the contest. Rishad Hossain bowled a fine spell in which he dismissed Jake Fraser-McGurk and if not for mini cameos from Will Sutherland and Hassan Khan, Renegades would have struggled to go past 120. Jordan then came back at the death to dent the batting side further and finish with figures of 4/19.
Renegades then had their hopes up when Mitch Owen edged the first ball of the chase to depart for a golden duck but Chaudhary followed that up with a hat-trick of boundaries. Tim Ward had a poor outing but it was all about Chaudhary in the run chase as he raced to 30 off just 12 and looked in blazing touch.
Ben McDermott joined the party as well and the duo completely put the game beyond the Renegades with a match-winning stand of 93. Chaudhary, who took Gurinder Sandhu to the cleaners towards the end, was caught near the boundary for 79 but McDermott and Tim David hit a six each in the 14th over to put Renegades out of their misery.
Brief scores: Melbourne Renegades 145/9 in 20 overs (Tim Seifert 34; Chris Jordan 4/19) lost to Hobart Hurricanes 149/3 in 13.5 overs (Nikhil Chaudhary 79, Ben McDermott 49*) by 7 wickets
