In what has been a tantalising series, England crushed Sri Lanka in a rain-affected 1st ODI. There were two lop-sided results in the next two matches. Sri Lanka humbled the hosts by 157 runs in the 2nd match at Chester-le-Street, but were at the receiving end of a 10-wicket humiliation at Old Trafford. In a run-fest at Lords, Kumar Sangakkara scored a historic century, his first at Lords in any format of the game, but was almost overshadowed by a brilliant 74-ball 121 from Jos Buttler, his first ODI ton. A brilliant final over from Lasith Malinga proved the difference between the two sides as Sri Lanka held on to a 7-run win.
Live score: England (Eng) vs Sri Lanka (SL), 5th ODI, Sri Lanka tour of England and Ireland 2014
The two team shave featured in 25 ODIs in England. The hosts have won 13 matches and have lost the remaining 12 games. This is the first time that the two teams will be facing each other on this ground.
The pitch is expected to be on the slower side and might assist the spinners. Rain and thunderstorms are predicted for the day, and the likelihood of a truncated match is on the offing
Sri Lanka got another wicket without quite forcing the batsman into it. Lasith Malinga came in for a new spell and bowled a full delivery well outside off. Ballance reached out to make contact but the ball, once again, appeared to have stopped on the batsman. He ended up chipping it right back to the bowler.
Alastair Cook was unruffled by the two wickets that fell at the other end and marched on to register his 19th ODI fifty. A very good knock from the skipper and England needed him to carry on to make it a bigger one. He had set the tone though by leading from the front.
Sri Lanka made a successful review after Joe Root was adjudged not out. Rooth, trying to play a reverse, paddle had got in cleanly on his glove before it lobbed to the 'keeper. The initial appeal was for LBW but Sri Lanka were looking for the catch as well and it went their way.
