It was then decided that the match should take place as a tribute to Phil Hughes. Any player wishing to opt out was given the freedom to do so, said Alastair Cook.

Persistent rain delayed toss at the Premadasa stadium in Colombo. The occasion, as mentioned earlier, is a sombre one. Flags were flying half-mast and there were tribute books kept at the ground for anyone to pay their respects to Phil Hughes.

After a delay of more than an hour, the toss finally took place with England deciding to bat. The game was reduced to 45 overs per side. Steve Finn came in for Ben Stokes for England while Sri Lanka were unchanged.
