Sri Lanka then won the toss and elected to bat. The hosts made three changes to their side. Kane Williamson, Grant Elliott and Adam Milne were picked ahead of Tom Latham, Nathan McCullum and Matt Henry, respectively.

Sri Lanka would take on the hosts, New Zealand, in a crucial encounter at Nelson. The first game was won by New Zealand, but Sri Lanka put up a thoroughly professional performance to emerge victorious in the second game in Hamilton. The third match was abandoned due to rain. In this series, New Zealand have tended to depend too much on Brendon McCullum at top of the order. So, they would be hoping for Kane Williamson to comeback into the set-up. He has been suffering from a shoulder injury. Ross Taylor's poor form is also a cause for concern.

Among the pacers, Matt Henry bowled with fire and aggression in the second game. Curiously, he hasn't been picked in the World Cup squad. For Sri Lanka, the likes of Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene have been in excellent form. One also expects the veteran batsman, Kumar Sangakkara to make his presence felt in the ODI series. Angelo Mathews, the skipper, has been a consistent performer for them over the years.

With Rangana Herath coming back from an injury, Sri Lanka can bank upon him to bowl with control in the middle overs. However, their pacers need to bowl with better control on good wickets for batting.
