India comfortably defeated New Zealand in the first of the five One Day Internationals (ODIs) in Dharamsala by six wickets with 101 balls to spare. Opening bowlers Umesh Yadav and Hardik Pandya shared five wickets amongst them, reducing the visitors to 65 for seven before a 71-run eight wicket stand between Tom Latham (79*) and Tim Southee (55) helped New Zealand post a respectable 190. India made a light work of the chase with Virat Kohli leading the way with an unbeaten 85.

Statistical highlights from the first ODI in Dharamsala:

900 - India became the first team to play 900 ODIs. They won 455, lost 399 and tied seven matches while 39 ended without a result. The next most by any team is 888 ODIs by Australia.

3 for 31 by Hardik Pandya is the fourth best by an Indian bowler on ODI debut. The only ones with better figures are Noel David (3-21), Varun Aaron (3-24) and Subroto Banarjee (3-30).
