In what turned out to be an engrossing day's play, Gandhi hogged the limelight with a well-constructed undefeated innings of 136. His knock also helped Gujarat to share honours on Day 1 of the Irani Cup.

On a track that assisted the seamers through the course of the day, he had his share of luck. However, Gandhi also showed the virtues of resolve and patience to overcome testing spells and compose his first first-class ton. There was a sense of relief when he reached the landmark. With wickets falling at the other end, he decided to take a few chances as he guided Gujarat to 300 for 8 at stumps. For Rest of India, Kaul and Pankaj Singh bowled verve-filled spells to snare seven of the eight wickets to fall.
Take a bow, Gandhi! This has been a gutsy hundred from the 26-year-old. He takes off his helmet, looks heavenwards and then celebrates the hundred by raising the bat towards the dressing room. This is his maiden first-class ton and something that he would cherish forever. He showcased solid defence and also cracked eye-catching shots to keep the scorecard moving over.
Just before he reached his first ton, there was some drama in the middle as Gaja edged one off Kuldeep that deflected off the 'keeper's gloves towards Tiwary at slip, but the umpire, curiously, turned down the massive appeal from Tiwary and the bowler!
Kaul, though, didn't have to wait for long as he snared the wicket of Thadani. The all-rounder continued to open the bat face and soon offered an easy chance to Tiwary at second slip who snaffled it with both hands.
Kaul bowled a ripper to dismiss Karan Patel. It pitched on a length and more importantly, was bowled in that threatening zone outside off. As a result, Patel had to play at it and Saha grabbed the catch gleefully. Patel, on the other hand, didn't help his cause by not covering for the movement. He could have had another scalp but Nair fluffed a catch in the slip cordon with Thadani being the beneficiary.
Gandhi compiled a quickfire fifty as he and Juneja resurrected Gujarat's innings. He raised his bat to acknowledge his team-mates. The 26-year-old played some fluent drives, sprinkled with steers and dabs. It has been a timely effort from Gandhi as when he came out to bat, Rest of India were in the ascendancy.
However, at the stroke of Tea break, Herwadkar prised out Juneja. The right-hander was getting frustrated as he wasn't able to tailor the gap through the cover-region. Eventually, he drilled one into the hands of Pujara, who snapped it up. The pair had shared an alliance of 109 for the fifth wicket before Juneja was dismissed.
Chirag Gandhi and Juneja showed the required batting nous to keep the opposition at bay. The duo also used the pace of RoI's bowlers to cheekily guide through the third-man region. Juneja and Gandhi have now shared an unbeaten 50-run stand to prop up the innings.
Mumbai/Bombay haven't just won the Ranji Trophy 41 times but also have bagged the Irani Cup 14 times. However, they haven't won the title since 1997-98.
Raval would be a disappointed man as he edged a rather innocuous delivery in the corridor outside off from Kaul to the 'keeper and was dismissed. He had done all the hard work to paddle through the first session. However, just after the break, Raval has given his wicket away.
Gujarat ended the session at 81 for 3. The RoI set-up would be pleased. On a track that did a bit off the seam, Pankaj Singh and Kaul bowled in good areas and struck at regular intervals. Just before the break, Parthiv was dismissed by Kaul and that would have lifted the spirits of the RoI camp. Gujarat need the duo of Juneja and Raval to stitch a substantial stand.
In the Ranji Trophy final against Mumbai, Parthiv eked out quite a few edges and survived. On another day in the Irani Cup he wasn't so lucky as he chopped one onto the stumps. Kaul is ecstatic after taking the prized scalp. Gujarat are in some trouble at 81 for 3.
