Latham (2/2): (Looking ahead to day two) For us to be in a position to declare at some point and there's a bit more batting to do. Especially in the first innings, in the position we are, it's important that we do start again tomorrow. Tomorrow's not guaranteed. It's important that we keep doing what we've been doing and then if that becomes a time where we need to pull out and we want to devolve then obviously I'd like to be in that position. But first and foremost, we've got a job to do with the bat tomorrow. (On Conway) He's fine. He obviously shows a little bit more, but that's Dev, that's why we love him. He played fantastically well. I'm sure he'll be recovering tonight and doing what he can to get ready for tomorrow. We've seen Dev over the last couple of Test matches, I think the way that he's played, top of the order, sometimes it can be challenging. Those shots through the offside, when he plays those cut shots and cover drives, we know things are on. Fingers crossed that he keeps going tomorrow.
Tom Latham (1/2): (On the decision to bat first) We probably left the decision around, team-wise, what we were going to do a little bit longer than what we usually do. We were going back and forth. We ended up going with the spinner and decided to bat first. It was obviously a great day. A great partnership between Dev (Conway) and myself. Happy with the day's work. (Conversations with Conway during the partnership) Just get a bit of momentum and you keep going. West Indies actually bowled quite well, especially in that second session. They went past the bat quite a lot. Recognising certain spells at times when things become a little bit tricky and trying to recognise situations where we might be able to get on top a little bit. The way Dev played today was outstanding, pretty free-flowing and took the pressure off me a little bit as well. It's certainly a lot of fun out there. (On the conditions) The first session was probably a little bit slower. didn't necessarily offer a huge amount from a sideways point of view, but then after lunch, it quickened up a little bit. It sort of started to offer a few more wobble seams and got a bit more out of the surface. We obviously managed to counteract that and just managed to keep building a bit of momentum. It would have been nice to be there in the end tonight, but Duff did a good job to get through there.
18:48 Local Time, 05:48 GMT, 11:18 IST | Stumps, day one: Conway receives a standing ovation and he soaks in the applause by raising his bat. Almost everything went New Zealand's way today. Opting to bat on a green deck, they started on a cautious note and scored just 11 runs off the first 8 overs. There was assistance - both in the air and off the deck - but the West Indies pacers weren't consistent with their line and length to exert enough pressure on the batters. The two left-handed openers cashed in. Both of them notched up their respective fifties after the lunch break. There was a rain break for about 20 minutes but that didn't hamper New Zealand's momentum. Conway struck some lovely boundaries to record his sixth Test ton. West Indies failed to create a single chance in the first two sessions and there wasn't a single maiden over in the post-lunch session. Latham scored his second century of the series and Anderson Phillip created a chance when the NZ captain was on 104 but that was put down by Tevin Imlach. It seemed like it would be a wicketless day. However, Roach - with the second new ball - found the breakthrough in the 87th over by dismissing Latham, courtesy a sharp catch by Chase at 1st slip. Conway still isn't done and batting tends to get easier as the ball gets softer. Can West Indies stage a fightback? Tune in tomorrow to find out.
