PLAYER OF THE MATCH
It wouldn't be Pakistan without some late drama. But what matters is that they got over the line on a pitch that was challenging for the batters. The teams have just a day's break before the second ODI. That's all for now. Goodbye!
Shaheen Afridi | Pakistan captain: Was a normal game for me. Nothing special. Credit to our batters. The way it turned and swung in second innings, they handled it really well. Batted really well on tough surface. That always happens (late drama). Will try it doesn't happen again. Thank you to the crowd, international cricket is happening after a long time here and they came in big numbers.
Matthew Breetzke | South Africa captain: Were probably 20-30 runs short. Lost wickets in a cluster which cost us the game. Lhuan-dre, special player, bright future ahead. Also Quinton back. Plenty of positives. Proud of the bowlers for the way they fought back and took it to the last over. Doesn't happen often.
Salman Agha | Player of the Match: It was on me, I could've finished the game. Was expecting dew today because that's been the case right through in the T20s we've played here. WIthout dew it was tough. It was turning and reversing. That partnership (between Rizwan and him) made us chase this down. We lost 2-3 quick wickets and just wanted to build a partnership. We knew we had enough time. Just wanted to play the ball on merit. Just communicated with each other on who will take charge when we needed runs.
11.02pm local: Pakistan made it a little more dramatic than it should've been, but they've got the job done. They were in control all the way through the chase before those final few overs where some late wickets caused needless flutters. Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub gave them a superb start against the new ball when it was seaming around a little bit as they put on 87 in just 15.2 overs. And then Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha batted with a lot of maturity in the middle overs, notching up fifties and carrying on the good work done by the openers. There was plenty of assistance for spinners right through the match, and there wasn't any dew either, so it wasn't as if they had it easier. Just that their quality came through.
Stat: This is the fifth successive win for Pakistan against South Africa in ODIs. This is also the highest successful chase at Faisalabad in ODIs.

Corbin Bosch to Naseem Shah, leg byes, 1 run, appeal for LBW but it's probably going down leg, and they've gotten across for the leg bye. That'll do it. Pakistan take the first ODI of this three-match series and Shaheen starts off his ODI captaincy on a winning note
Naseem Shah, right handed bat, comes to the crease

Corbin Bosch to Nawaz, out Caught by Fortuin!! Oh it's still not over! Nawaz seems to have been taken by surprise here by the length. It's banged into the pitch halfway down, climbs on Nawaz as he tries working it through the on-side and balloons off the leading edge to backward point. The edge was found near the bat shoulder. Nawaz c Fortuin b Corbin Bosch 9(9) [6s-1]
Corbin Bosch to Nawaz, THATS OUT!! Caught!!

Corbin Bosch to Shaheen Afridi, 1 run, full toss outside off, too easy for Shaheen as he knocks it to sweeper cover
49.1
Corbin Bosch to Shaheen Afridi, 2 runs, low full toss outside off, driven through extra cover and they're back for two
Corbin Bosch [6.0-0-29-1] is back into the attack
Bosch to bowl the final over. Linde's previous over was a very good one but they probably went with Ferreira because of the left-handers in the middle. Okay, four needed

Ferreira to Nawaz, SIX, that will ease the nerves! Error in length from Ferreira, fires it in and it's right in the slot for Nawaz who smashes it straight back. Brilliant shot under pressure
48.5
Ferreira to Nawaz, no run, beaten! Very quick on a good length outside off, Nawaz is rooted to the crease as he swings hard but there's a little bit of turn which is enough at that pace. Goes past the edge
48.4
Ferreira to Nawaz, no run, goes for the cut and chops it to backward point! Another dot! Fired in on a good length close to off, doesn't have the room he's looking for and mistimes it
