PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Player of the Match, Rishad Hossain, spoke in the local language and that interview couldn't be transcribed. So that's all from this first ODI. The second one is on Tuesday. Goodbye for now!
Mehidy Hasan Maraz | Bangladesh captain: We played the last five matches, but we did not win any of them. But still, we believed that we could come back strongly. And obviously, this match was very important for us. I think the boys played really well. You know, we have been playing so many T20 matches over the last four or five series, but not too many ODIs. But now that we’re playing, it’s helping us adjust. And yes, obviously, the batters on top, Shanto and Ridoy, the way they batted was excellent. In the middle, the debutant Mahidul was calm and cool, and played according to the situation. And yes, in the end, Rishad, it was a great knock. Yeah, definitely. This year, maybe this is our last series, but hopefully next year there will be more coming. I hope the boys understand what we need to do. We’ve discussed many things, the batters have to play positively and focus on getting runs. Because if we get runs on the scoreboard, definitely, we can win matches.
Shai Hope | WI captain: Yeah, it was a tough one. We understood the challenges, especially as a batter on that surface. But yeah, we’ve got to put this one behind us as quickly as we can. We’ve got two days to turn around, take all the learnings from this one, see the importance of our spinners to be a lot more consistent. They bowled really well in that middle period and, you know, stopped the flow of runs for a period of time. But yeah, just got to take the learnings from this one and come back stronger for the next game. But to be fair, on a surface like that, you’re never really in. So I thought the start that we had was a very commendable one, especially, you know, trying to chase down a score of 200. It’s very important as an opening pair to set the tone and they did just that. We just needed to continue along that vein in the middle period there, especially when you want to build that foundation and make it easy work in the back end. But like I said before, we’ve got to take the learnings from this one and, in two days’ time, try to turn things around for the next game hopefully on a pitch that’s a little more conducive, one you can understand and read more. I don’t think it’s going to change much, to be fair, but we’ve got to just assess and adapt as quickly as we can for the next game and find ways to beat Bangladesh and level the series. That’s the way to go.
20:32 Local Time, 14:32 GMT, 20:02 IST: After that opening stand of 51, West Indies have collapsed in a heap to go down 0-1 in this three-match series. The pitch was a difficult one and they couldn't even get anywhere close to the target of 208. Rishad Hossain made merry with the assistance on offer, picking up a 6-fer after his quickfire 26 earlier in the evening. What a performance from him to register his career-best figures. No prizes for guessing who the Player of the Match will be, although don't forget the knocks from Towhid Hridoy and debutant Mahidul Islam either. Stay tuned for that interview and more. Presentations coming up..
