PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Three losses in a row for the Hyderabad Kingsmen. They now have a one-week break before their next game in Karachi. As for the Multan Sultans, they will look to carry this momentum and stay at the top of the table. Their next game is on Friday against the Lahore Qalandars. That’s all we have from this contest. It’s a double-header day tomorrow, so do remember to join us for both games. Until then, cheers and goodbye!!
Ashton Turner | Multan Sultans skipper: It’s really satisfying that we’ve had contributions from all 11 players so early in the tournament, and we will take a lot of confidence from this win (on team performance). You always need the context of both innings to judge things properly - we weren’t perfect, but perfection isn’t really attainable; there are areas, especially in the first half, that we can reflect on and improve going forward (on overall assessment). Given how the second innings played out, you can cut the bowlers some slack - it was tough with the conditions being wet right from the start and it being a very good batting wicket (on bowling struggles). Watching Farhan bat is amazing - I’m fortunate to travel and see such talented players, and he’s certainly one of them, though there are many quality cricketers here (on opposition batter). Captaining comes with challenges, but I’m really enjoying it - I’ve got a great group, strong support staff, and we’re all working together to improve every day, which hopefully leads to success (on captaincy experience).
Marnus Labuschagne | Hyderabad Kingsmen skipper: Getting 225 on the board, with or without dew, you’d normally feel it’s a defendable total, but it just didn’t work out that way tonight - they batted really well and their openers got off to the perfect start in a big chase (on defending the total). We missed a few chances in the field which probably cost us, but I’m really proud of the intent - we wanted to come back strong in the tournament, and the way our top order set the tone was excellent, with strong contributions in the middle as well, so there are a lot of positives from the batting performance (on team effort). From a bowling perspective, there are things we can look back at - personally, maybe I could have made a different decision around the 15th over, but those are things you reflect on later; overall, we just need to keep trusting our skills and execute better (on bowling decisions). Scoring 220-plus is a big positive for us, especially after a couple of games where things weren’t clicking, so that’s something we can build on (on positives). It’s a long tournament, and while the result didn’t go our way, we will learn from this and come back stronger going into the next phase in Karachi (on future outlook).
Sahibzada Farhan | Player of the Match: From the first innings, it was clear that the pitch was very good - the way Saim Ayub started showed that the wicket was excellent, but the key is how you convert that start into a big innings, and I think the hundreds I’ve been scoring in domestic cricket are now helping me at the international level (on pitch and form). Whenever I reach fifty or sixty, I try not to throw it away and aim to convert it into a big score - nine centuries is a big achievement, but I want to make even more (on converting starts into centuries). When you look at players like Rizwan and Babar Azam, they spend time at the crease and control their game well - you have to manage your body and tempo even when the ball is coming nicely onto the bat, and that control helps you push on to a hundred (on mindset during innings). Being in form is one thing, but contributing as an opener and taking the innings deep is very important for the team, especially in run chases (on role as an opener). Playing for a new franchise doesn’t feel new at all - the owner Ali Tareen and the management are very supportive and involved like players themselves, which creates a great environment, and I’m focused on winning more matches for Multan Sultans - I’m not fully satisfied with just this one hundred (on franchise environment and ambitions). - Translated from Urdu.
22:38 Local Time, 17:38 GMT: That was a clinical performance from the Multan Sultans. They never looked out of the game during the chase and were always in control. Sahibzada Farhan stole the show with a sensational century, but it was his opening partner, Steve Smith, who did the early damage with a blistering 46 off just 20 balls, including two fours and four sixes. Multan raced to 108/0 in eight overs and stayed well ahead of the required rate throughout. Masood and Minhas chipped in with handy cameos, while Farhan ensured he remained unbeaten till the very end to seal the win. In fairness, the dew factor made life difficult for the bowlers and fielders, and Hyderabad Kingsmen were always on the back foot after failing to pick up a wicket in the powerplay. Stick around for the post-match reactions...
