Born in Ireland, Tim O'Brien fine tuned his skills at Middlesex. He played 5 Tests but managed only 59 runs before being dropped. For Middlesex though he was a giant, amassing over 11000 first-class runs. In his final first-class match, he hit 111 in the second innings accompanied by 90 in the first.

Tim was, at the time of his death in 1948, the oldest cricketer to have played in England-Australia Tests. His brother John also played international cricket for Ireland.
