Born September 18, 1892, Newstead Colliery, Sam Staples figured in three Tests for England in 1928. He was in the reckoning for the 1928-29 tour to Australia before falling sick.
However, Staples was a key bowler for Nottinghamshire with an ability to bowl long spells. Medium-paced, Staples was also smart in mixing up his pace - his slow cutters often hoodwinked the opposition. He played close to two decades for Nottinghamshire, taking 1331 first-class wickets. He was also a decent lower order batsman to boot.
After World War II, Staples became coach to Hampshire until 1949. Staples passed away age the age of 57 after being in ill-health for a few months.
