SUMMARY

Rustomji Jamshedji Dorabji Jamshedji, the oldest Indian on Test debut, was a left-arm spinner, who played just one Test for India in 1933-34. At the age of 41 years and 27 days, he made his debut at the Bombay Gymkhana against England.

In a game that India lost by 9 wickets, Jamshedji took 3/137 as England made 438 in their first innings. He featured in 29 First-class games and took 134 wickets at an average of 22.12. His best bowling performance came at the Bombay Quadrangular, where he represented the Parsis.

In 1922/23, he took 11/122, including a 7-wicket haul in the second innings as the Parsis defeated the Hindus in the final. Against the Europeans in the 1928/29 final, he picked up 10 wickets for 104 runs. After the Parsis won, the crowd went berserk and mobbed the Parsis team members. Jamshedji was a hero for the crowd, he was lifted on a chair and carried to the pavilion.

In the early 1920s, Jamshedji met great English left-arm spinner, Wilfred Rhodes while playing in the Bombay Quadrangular. It is believed that Rhodes told Jamshedji, "If I had your powers of spin, no side would get a hundred."

He passed away on April 5, 1976. He was 83 years old.
