The times of Lasith Malinga
Subdued start to ODI career: Malinga made his ODI debut against UAE in Sri Lanka's first match of the 2004 Asia Cup. There wasn't anything dramatic about his debut as he ended with figures of 1/39
Announced his arrival against England: Malinga showcased his pedigree for the first time at the international level in an away ODI series against England. Sri Lanka whitewashed England 3-0 in that series and Malinga played the decisive role by picking up 13 wickets.
Sensational Slinga picks four in four: He achieved an unprecedented landmark against South Africa in the 2007 World Cup when he picked up four wickets in four balls. However, his stellar effort wasn't enough to win the match for his team.
Career best figures against Kenya: He rattled Kenya's tailenders in the 2011 World Cup and became the only bowler in the history of the game to pick up a hat-trick twice in World Cup cricket. He ended with career best figures of 6/38 that day.
Champions of Asia: Malinga brought his 'A' game to the fore in the Asia Cup final. His five-wicket-haul restricted Pakistan to a manageable total and Sri Lanka chased down the target to become the champions of Asia.
Dropped from the ODIs: Malinga was dropped from the ODIs against Pakistan in 2017 due to indifferent form. This came as a major set back for the Sri Lankan.
Rolled back the years against England: He has always managed to produce one 'Malinga Moment' in World Cups. And his moment in the 2019 World Cup came against England at Headingley when he picked up a four-wicket-haul to win his side a memorable match.
Malinga played his last ODI on July 26 against Bangladesh, and was given a spirited farewell at the R Premadasa International cricket stadium, Colombo
Malinga finishes his ODI career with 338 wickets, one more than India's Anil Kumble. He will finish his career as the 9th highest wicket-taker.
