After India lost Rohit early on the final day, Pujara and Gill scored 114 for the second wicket to get the chase going.
Gill made 91 - his highest score in Test cricket - and kept the side in the chase with his positive strokplay.
Pujara stood tall and coped several blows on the body during his knock of 56 off 211 balls.
Once Rahane was dismissed, Pant and Pujara took the side ahead with their 61-run stand.
Cummins dismissed Pujara to give India an opening.
Sundar made 22 off 29 and hung around with Pant to take India close.
