THAT'S THAT FOR DAY 4

New Zealand will need seven wickets on the final day of the first Test against England to take a 1-0 series lead in the two-match. England took their score to 132 but still trail by 237 at Eden Park after the hosts declared on 427 for 8.

New Zealand's score was built on twin ton - from Kane Williamson (102) on the second day and an unbeaten 145 from Henry Nicholls on the fourth day. They helped New Zealand pile on the pressure and gain a lead of 369. New Zealand gave themselves 148 overs to shoot down England but would have probably liked a few more wickets in the final session under lights.

Both dismissed English openers will rue the way they got out. They were more culpable in this scenario rather than the bowler earning the wicket. Alastair Cook fell in the third over to Trent Boult. The left-arm pacer floated one down the leg side and Cook managed to clip the ball straight to the 'keeper to fall for 2.

Mark Stoneman then steadied the innings with Joe Root and the duo saw off the second session without any damage. A much more stern test awaited the English batsmen when they walked out to bat and both Root and Stoneman showed they are more than capable of fighting their way out of the Test. Stoneman fell in the 30th over after they had stitched an 88-run stand. He got to his half-century with a six over fine-leg. However, he tried the same shot and found Boult at fine-leg on the very next delivery and fell for 55.This was Stoneman's fourth fifties in nine Test but he is yet to kick on and make a century.

From the other end, Root stood tall and made 51 before he was dismissed by Boult and that turned out to be the last ball of the day. Boult pinged Root on the gloves with a nasty back of length delivery and then had him caught down the leg side to leave an unkind cut just before the players walked off.

Earlier, New Zealand gave themselves 148 possible overs to bowl England out of the second time. They batted most of first two sessions to bury England under a pile of runs as memories of 0-4 Ashes humbling, where the bowling attack looked toothless and inept, resurfaced.

New Zealand started the day with positive intent but were cautious enough to not throw away wickets early on. With the sun out and the ball not doing much, both got in and took on the English pacers to get the runs flowing.

Both Nicholls and Watling scored fluently but the latter threw away his wicket in the 106th over of the innings as he fell to Stuart Broad. The right-hander chased a wide one from the pacer without much feet movement and could only manage a thick outside edge to the 'keeper. New Zealand had just crossed 260 at that stage and taken their lead past 200.

Colin de Grandhomme walked in next and scored a promising 39-ball 29 before falling to Craig Overton. If England were expected to run through the lower order after Watling's wicket, they received a counter-attack from Nicholls and de Grandhomme. They scored 49 for the sixth wicket in next ten overs to pile on the pressure on the visitors.

De Grandhomme tried to pull and fullish ball from outside off and was caught behind after top-edging the ball to the 'keeper. Nicholls got to his second Test ton just before the break when he took on Moeen Ali in the 127th over. Tim Southee and Nicholls frustrated even further before Kane Williamson decided he had enough on the board to knock England out of the contest.

Big wicket

Boult has dismissed Root on the last ball of the day. Had pinged him on the finger with a short ball and then had him caught down the leg side on the very next delivery. New Zealand have surged ahead with this wicket.
