Stats highlights from the bat-dominated second ODI between India and South Africa in Raipur on Wednesday (December 3):

359 is the joint-highest target successfully chased down in ODIs against India, alongside as many by Australia in Mohali in 2019, powered by Ashton Turner's 84* (43).

It also happens to be the third-highest successful run-chase for South Africa, after 435 against Australia in the 2006 Johannesburg epic and 372 against the same opponents in Durban in 2016. Those two remain the top two successful chases in Men's ODIs. (Note: Netherlands won via a Super Over finish after levelling with West Indies at 374 in Harare during the CWC 2023 Qualifiers).

3 - South Africa have now gunned down a target of 350 or more thrice in ODIs, the joint-most alongside India and England.

2 - Only two higher successful-chases of 350 or more in ODIs at an away or neutral venue: 370 by Netherlands against Scotland at Dundee in June this year and 361 by England against the West Indies at Bridgetown in 2019.

5 - Five of the 13 successful 350-plus run-chases have come in India, no other country has had more than two. The other eight are split as follows: two each in South Africa, England and Pakistan and one each in Scotland and the Caribbean.

3 - There were three individual hundreds recorded in the game - Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Aiden Markram - the joint-most in an ODI between India and South Africa, alongside as many at the Wanderers in 2001 (Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Gary Kirsten) and at Wankhede in 2015 (Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis, AB de Villiers).

Interestingly, there have been three instances of multiple hundreds scored for India against South Africa in ODIs, and all ended in defeats: in New Delhi in 1991 (Ravi Shastri and Sanjay Manjrekar), the aforementioned Wanderers 2001 game and the one on Wednesday. They have done so 41 times against all other teams combined, with a 37-4 win-loss record.

It was the 44th time that India had multiple individual centuries in an ODI innings. The next highest such count for any team is 30 by South Africa.

720 is the highest match-aggregate in an ODI featuring these two sides, surpassing 681 from the series opener in Ranchi on Sunday.

1 in 1,048,576 - The probability of losing 20 consecutive tosses - an unwanted record which India holds by a fair distance in ODIs, a run that started with the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad. The next worst toss-losing streak in ODIs is 11 by Netherlands between March 2011 and August 2013.

Kohli continues his giant strides

34 - Kohli has now hit hundreds at a staggering 34 different venues in ODI cricket, levelling with Sachin Tendulkar. Rohit Sharma (26) is next on this list, followed by 21 each to Ricky Ponting, Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers.

11 - Kohli now has 11 different streaks of hundreds in two (or more) consecutive ODI innings. The next most for anyone is six by AB de Villiers. He remains one of the two Indians with three consecutive ODI hundreds (having done that in October 2018), alongside Rohit Sharma, who did that during the 2019 World Cup.

7 - Kohli has the most ODI tons against South Africa, followed by five each to Tendulkar and David Warner. Having also notched up a ton when he last played against South Africa before this series - at the Eden Gardens during the 2023 World Cup - he became the second to register three consecutive hundreds against the Proteas in the format, along with Kane Williamson.

He now has seven (or more) hundreds against four different opponents: 10 vs Sri Lanka, nine vs West Indies, eight vs Australia and seven vs South Africa. Tendulkar is the only one to have done so against multiple opponents: nine vs Australia and eight vs Sri Lanka.

41.4% - Kohli's conversion rate of 41.4% from 50-plus scores to hundreds (53 out of 128) is the highest among the 215 batters to have played at least 100 innings in ODIs, closely followed by Hashim Amla (40.91%), Quinton de Kock (40.74%) and David Warner (40%).

Markram and Gaikwad showcase their class

77 balls taken by Ruturaj Gaikwad to get to his hundred made it the fastest ever for India against South Africa in the format, only behind Yusuf Pathan's 68-ball effort in Centurion in 2011.

195 runs added by Kohli and Gaikwad for the third wicket made it the highest partnership for India against South Africa in an ODI (for any wicket), surpassing the 194-run stand between Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik in Gwalior in 2010.

50.9% of Aiden Markram's runs (56 out of 110) came across the mid-on to mid-off region. Of the 142 ODI hundreds scored for South Africa since January 2007, this one had the second-highest share of runs scored down the ground, after 51.28% (60 out of 117) for David Miller against Sri Lanka in Durban in 2017. Markram hit four fours and three sixes to go with 22 singles in that zone.

Overall, South Africa scored 143 runs in "the V" during their chase, accounting for 41.5% of their total (barring extras), compared to India's 33.2%.
