Australia Women continued their juggernaut with a commanding 90-run win in the second ODI against the West Indies Women, sealing the series with a game to go. In pursuit of 270, the home side crumbled to 179 as the visitors claimed their fifth win on the trot in this tour.
Having already won the T20Is 3-0, Australia will now eye another clean sweep. Beth Mooney, who missed the first ODI to injury, hit a steady 65, gluing together an Australia innings that suffered a middle-order stutter. Placed at 140/5 at one point, they crossed 250 thanks to contributions from Georgia Wareham (39) and Nicola Carey (30*), and a late flourish from Alana King (26*).
With captain Sophie Molineux sitting out, Tahlia McGrath was in charge, picking up two wickets, but it was Australia's trio of spinners - King, Wareham and Ash Gardner - that clamped down on West Indies in the middle overs, chipping away with regular wickets to unsettle their chase.
Unlike earlier, West Indies started off strong, putting together a 50-run ODI opening stand against Australia for the first time since 2014. Qiana Joseph (29) was the first one to go, caught and bowled by Gardner. Captain Hayley Matthews, who took three wickets earlier, looked set for a fifty, but ended up lofting one to deep extra cover off McGrath. Stafanie Taylor fell right after, cleaned up by Wareham, while Deandra Dottin edged one to slip later in the over. In a space of six balls, Australia took a firm grip on the game.
Chinelle Henry tried to get a move on the climbing run-rate, clubbing King for one of only two sixes in the game in the 31st over. But she was dismissed soon after, top-edging a sweep off Gardner. An attempt for a quick single led to Shemaine Campbell being run out, the confusion typified their collapse. Jahzara Claxton missed a full-toss to be lbw, adding to their string of poor dismissals. From 94/2, they stumbled to 130/9.
Afy Fletcher put up a semblance of a fight, remaining not out on 32, but it was too little, too late.
This is now Australia's fourth consecutive bilateral ODI series win against the West Indies. Overall, Australia have lost just one out of 20 games against them.
