Pakistan fought back well late in the day by picking up a couple of quick wickets. Sangakkara fell on exactly 50 to give Riaz his second wicket while leg-spinner Zulfiqar Babar dismissed Lahiru Thirimanne cheaply. The hosts will be resting their hopes on Silva and skipper Angelo Mathews, who is at the crease, to help Sri Lanka towards a good total. Pakistan, meanwhile, will be looking to strike early and restrict Sri Lanka.
Mathews began in a positive fashion by scoring a six over long-on off Yasir Shah in the 66th over. However, the Lankan Test skipper had to depart in the 69th over as he became Riaz's third scalp when he was bowled off an inside edge. Mathews departed on 19, leaving Sri Lanka at 189/4.
Kithuruwan Vithanage, who managed a couple of boundaries off Junaid in the 88th over, had a lucky break as he was put down by Younis Khan at second slip. There was a loud shout for leg-before in the 89th over when Kaushal tried to paddle sweep Babar. Replays revealed that the batsman managed to get some glove on the ball, and took three runs which helped him to 99. The opener brought up his second Test hundred in the same over, getting there in style with a boundary to deep extra cover.
Pakistan opted for a review in the 73rd over after the onfield umpire turned down a caught behind appeal against Dinesh Chandimal. The bowler Wahab did not appear too confident, but Pakistan opted for the review nevertheless. However, replays revealed that there was aclear gap between the bat and the ball, allowing Chandimal to carry on. Three overs later, Kaushal hit one over Yasir Shah's head for a four, before taking a single to take Sri Lanka to the 200-run mark.
Chandimal and Kaushal upped the ante by taking the attack to the spinners. The former took a liking to Babar while Kaushal scored a few off Yasir Shah. Pakistan opted for the second new ball before the start of the 82nd over and they operated with Babar and Junaid Khan in tandem. The left-arm spinner managed to send back Chandimal in the 85th over when the batsman failed to pick the arm ball and was bowled on 23.
Younis and Misbah remained unbeaten to take Pakistan to 38/3 at tea. The visitors were in a lot of trouble, having lost their top-order cheaply. Mohamnmad Hafeez fell to a loose drive while Ahmed Shehzad didn't pick the inswinger and both ended up getting out to Dhammika Prasad. Azhar Ali and Younis Khan looked to have stemmed the rot, but Pakistan's nemesis, Herath, struck, removing the number three batsman with a straight ball. Pakistan will be hoping for the senior players, Younis and Misbah, to help the team out of trouble while Sri Lanka will be eager to extend their dominance in the post-tea session.
Mohammad Hafeez struck in the 92nd over to send back Kithuruwan Vithanage for 18. The batsman came down the track and tried to make contact with the ball on the full. However, he ended up scooping a simple catch back to the bowler. Sri Lanka were 261/6.
Sri Lanka scored close to 100 runs in the first session on Day 3 while Kaushal Silva managed to register his second Test ton. However, the hosts also lost three wickets and went in to lunch at 273/6. Skipper Mathews departed early in the session as Wahab Riaz picked up his third wicket. Dinesh Chandimal put on a steady partnership with Kaushal before he failed to pick an arm ball and was dismissed by Babar. Vithanage was also involved in a useful stand with Kaushal before handing a simple return catch to Hafeez. Dilruwan Perera was unbeaten at lunch along with Kaushal and the onus will be on the seventh-wicket pair to lead Sri Lanka towards a good total.
Yasir Shah struck in the first over after the lunch break to remove Dilruwan Perera.
