New Zealand had a day to forget yesterday. They lost the toss and were on the field to see the hosts rack up a mammoth 389-2, the highest first day score at the Gabba. Australia were propelled by two fine centuries, from David Warner and Usman Khawaja, Warner missed out on his maiden double century but the returning Khawaja cashed in on being given his preferred position of No. 3 to score his first Test match century. He is unbeaten on 102 and has skipper Steven Smith along with him.
Live Cricket Score of Australia vs New Zealand, 1st Test, Day 2 at Brisbane
Australia have been scoring at 4.4 runs per over. They could get over 500 soon after Lunch today at this rate. New Zealand are behind but not quite out of this. If they can have a good first session, they can still stay in this one because of the rate at which Australia have scored. But they need wickets. Trent Boult had a sub-par Day 1 and will need to complement Southee. The good news for NZ is that Southee, who had a scan for some back trouble, is declared fit to bowl today.
The Gabba pitch should liven up on Days 2 and 3. Should be fun!
The real Trent Boult has arrived at the Gabba. A superb opening spell has been rewarded. The left-arm pacer troubled both Khawaja and Smith in his first couple of overs before knocking over the Australian skipper (48) with a peach of a delivery. This one swung back in at pace to go through Smith's gate and knock the off pole over. Superb ball.
He is hitting his lines and his pace is up. Will be tough to contend with on a second day Gabba surface. Khawaja's has score just two runs today and he is joined by Adam Voges, playing his first Test at home. This should be an interesting session.
Inconsistency slipping in to the New Zealand bowlers once again. They are bowling a couple of really good deliveries and then following it up with some poor deliveries. Usman Khawaja has been tied down but Adam Voges has quietly moved on to 17.
For the visitors, Trent Boult bowled and extended first spell before McCullum decided to bring on Bracewell. The big blow for the Black Caps is that Southe has pulled up once again with a sore back and he has stepped out of the field. Hope its nothing serious. The last thing McCullum wanted here was to lose one of his lead bowlers.
Australia have reached 430-3. If these guys see out this session, batting will get much easier post lunch.
