Hello and Good Morning to an early start here at the Gabba. It's been a while since we've seen a Test go to the fifth day. This one perhaps wasn't heading there either at Tea on Day 4 before rain and bad light saw the final session cancelled yesterday giving New Zealand an outside chance of saving this Test match. I think it's safe to say that they are not going after the 504 target. So draw is the only option available for them. They have seven wickets to bat out around 90 overs today!
Live Cricket Score of Australia vs New Zealand, 1st Test, Day 5 at Brisbane
Australia have been rampant in this Test and will hope that the washed out session doesn't deprive them of a win. They'll have to be patient and not lose their lines in desperation. They are still on top here. But the possibility of showers today looms large on them!
There's the early wicket Australia were looking for. Josh Hazlewood gives it to them with a short delivery. Taylor sets himself to play the pull but the ball comes on to him slower than anticipated, catches him on the glove and balloons to Steve Smith in the slips. Unfortunate but Taylor has to go. Just how Australia wanted to start this day.
Here's the injured James Neesham.
Big blow for New Zealand. James Neesham has been ruled out of the remainder of this series after suffering a back injury. He will however bat in this innings. Recurring injury troubles for this all-rounder. New Zealand deemed Corey Anderson to not being fit enough. WIll they consider bringing him now if there is an outside chance?
The big question after Taylor got out was to find out how McCullum would play now. We have some answers for you. The Kiwi skipper is looking very positive, hitting every bad ball to the fence. He smashed three fours in succession forcing Steven Smith to ring in the bowling changes. Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Johnson have come in.
New Zealand should look to see this session off without losing another wicket. The possibility of rain in the afternoon could just help them sneak a draw here.
This was coming. James Neesham has been worked over by Mitchell Johnson's short balls. Bowls two pacy short deliveries that force Neesham to fend awkwardly. The first one, he didn't get any bat on but the very next delivery ballooned off his gloves to Joe Burns at FSL. Five down, five to go for Australia. Johnson is now level with Brett Lee on 310 Test wickets!
McCullum meanwhile is going after his shots. He's just smoked MJ for a four and a pulled six! What excitement. He's now joined by BJ Watling. Remember Wellington 2014?
A 44-ball 50 when the team is battling to save a Test match. Very few people have the conviction to stay with their natural games in such situations. Baz has pounced on anything loose this morning and has blazed away to a half-century. He's even had the audacity to pull Mitchell Johnson despite a deep square-leg in place. He gets to a six by dancing down to Lyon and hitting him over head for a six! What a man!
Meanwhile, Jimmy Neesham clearly incapacitated by the sore back is being peppered by a succession of bouncers from Mitchell Johnson. Can he hang on with his skipper?
