The nightmare of the Colombo leg of the 2025 World Cup is set to come to an end on Friday. With more predictions of rain, the farewell outing at the venue promises familiarity. Fortunately for the competition, it's a dead rubber between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, the two Asian teams who have had to spend much of their time in the tournament at the venue, spending nearly as much time resting out in the rains as they have on the field, putting the complex calculators to work.

If the points do get split again, Pakistan will become the only team in the competition to go winless. Weirdly, it will also allow them to break the wooden spoon streak without even winning a match in the competition (in the hope that India would beat Bangladesh in their final league game). For Sri Lanka, it will allow them to jump ahead of New Zealand, a team they would've pinned their hopes on for the Thursday encounter to keep their semifinal hopes alive.

Yet, despite the rain advantage, both teams would prefer to take the field, and contest for a secondary Asian supremacy in a tournament they would've waited for three years. Sri Lanka have so far featured in only two games which weren't interrupted by rain. Pakistan, on the other hand, featured in four, including one in which they managed to have Australia on the mat for a brief while. They similarly threatened England as well, before rain washed away their hopes of a historic win.

Their incompleteness of the campaign could get a fitting and competitive farewell on Friday between two teams that didn't get adequate opportunities to showcase their respective upgraded versions at the global event. All of that, however, is conditional to the mercy of weather Gods on Colombo's month-long residents.
