Sri Lanka Women vs Pakistan Women, 25th Match

Toss delayed due to wet outfield
Pakistan Women have won the toss and have opted to bat
We are ready for the toss.
17:46 Local Time, 12:16 GMT, 17:46 IST: And we have good news. Toss at 17:45, play at 18:15. 34 overs a side game. Powerplay of 7 overs.
17:27 Local Time, 11:57 GMT, 17:27 IST: The drizzle has stopped and the covers have been peeled off. We might get a start time soon, looking at live visuals.
17:08 Local Time, 11:38 GMT, 17:08 IST: The rain is back, and so are the covers. Just when things were beginning to look bright and promising, the weather has turned again. It’s a real setback for the ground staff, who had worked tirelessly - using Super Soppers, sponge mats, and even moving the boundary ropes to make play possible. All that hard work, unfortunately, goes in vain for now. The toss is further delayed.
16:20 Local Time, 10:50 GMT, 16:20 IST: Most of the covers have come off now and that’s a good sign! Just the long-on region seems a bit tricky at the moment. From what we can see, the curator is chatting with the umpires, perhaps suggesting they bring the boundary rope in a touch on that side.
16:02 Local Time, 10:32 GMT, 16:02 IST: Next inspection is at 16:15 local time is the latest update. A lot of water has accumulated near the boundary areas, and despite the efforts of the ground staff, it will take a while before conditions are suitable for playing. For now, the floodlights have been switched on as the spectators continue to wait in the stands..
15:55 Local Time, 10:25 GMT, 15:55 IST: Things looking much brighter and better as the groundstaff continue to remove the remaining covers slowly. For now, the umpire is walking out in the middle with an umbrella and inspecting the conditions. Checking for the damp areas on the outfield. The groundstaff are hard at work as the Super Sopper is being rolled out to clear the water off the covers. We should have an official update soon.
Darshil: The crowd is excited and eagerly waiting for the rain to stop and see whether the Sri Lanka finish off the game in style or Pakistan to witness their first win of this Women's World Cup..
15:38 Local Time, 10:08 GMT, 15:38 IST: It has stopped raining and the groundstaff have slowly started peeling off the covers. Promising signs. We should hear about the toss and start time soon enough..
15:14 Local Time, 09:44 GMT, 15:14 IST: Still raining in Colombo as the covers remain firmly in place.. No activity by the groundstaff as the wait continues..
Rumesh Ratnayake, SL Coach: It's a good feeling to take forward with the team and we are hoping that (the win against Bangladesh) will encourage the team to give their best today. Eventually she (Hasini Perera) broke the chains, so to speak, by going past fifty (against Bangladesh.) That was very useful for us. Of course, we would’ve loved for her to stay a bit longer and not put us under pressure towards the end in that match, but we learned a lot from that performance, and we are very happy for her. Quite a few things (have been impressive) really. The character they show under pressure, the resilience they have when things don’t go their way, and the way they bounce back, that’s been wonderful to watch. The balance between young and experienced players certainly helps a lot. Their fighting spirit and attitude are very heartening, and as a coach, it’s a real delight to see that. I am sure you know the perfect ending is a win for us! The opposition will come with the same intent, but our focus is on winning all the little moments, the small aspects of the game. We keep reminding the team to be the best they can be and to give their absolute best effort today. Hopefully, it all comes together today.
14:27 Local Time, 08:57 GMT, 14:27 IST: It's raining in Colombo, hence toss has been delayed.. The ground is fully covered at the moment as it continues to rain steadily. The Pakistan players are waiting in the dugout, stay around for further updates..
14:00 Local Time, 08:30 GMT, 14:00 IST: India Women cruised to a comfortable victory over New Zealand Women last night, sealing their spot as the fourth team to qualify for the semifinals. Attention now shifts to Colombo, where Sri Lanka Women take on Pakistan Women - at a venue that has offered little joy so far this tournament. Sri Lanka have managed just one win, while Pakistan are still searching for their first. Both sides entered the competition with modest expectations, and as the group stage nears its end, neither has managed to turn things around. The weather doesn’t look promising for today’s fixture either, but with both teams eager to finish their campaigns on a positive note, we could still be in for an engaging contest. Stay tuned for the toss and teams..

The nightmare of the Colombo leg of the 2025 World Cup is set to come to an end on Friday. With more predictions of rain, the farewell outing at the venue promises familiarity. Fortunately for the competition, it's a dead rubber between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, the two Asian teams who have had to spend much of their time in the tournament at the venue, spending nearly as much time resting out in the rains as they have on the field, putting the complex calculators to work.

If the points do get split again, Pakistan will become the only team in the competition to go winless. Weirdly, it will also allow them to break the wooden spoon streak without even winning a match in the competition (in the hope that India would beat Bangladesh in their final league game). For Sri Lanka, it will allow them to jump ahead of New Zealand, a team they would've pinned their hopes on for the Thursday encounter to keep their semifinal hopes alive.

Yet, despite the rain advantage, both teams would prefer to take the field, and contest for a secondary Asian supremacy in a tournament they would've waited for three years. Sri Lanka have so far featured in only two games which weren't interrupted by rain. Pakistan, on the other hand, featured in four, including one in which they managed to have Australia on the mat for a brief while. They similarly threatened England as well, before rain washed away their hopes of a historic win.

Their incompleteness of the campaign could get a fitting and competitive farewell on Friday between two teams that didn't get adequate opportunities to showcase their respective upgraded versions at the global event. All of that, however, is conditional to the mercy of weather Gods on Colombo's month-long residents.
