PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Time to draw curtains on game 2. Paarl Royals take on Sunrisers Eastern Cape at the Boland Park in a few minutes from now. Hop tabs and catch all the action from that game. Cheers!!
Duan Jansen | Player of the Match: I’m very excited and very happy, obviously. I think it was very good for me, not being involved in last season, and I felt I needed to come back and make a statement but also add value to the team, which was very important to me. To come out in my first game and put in that performance for the team was very pleasing. From a mental perspective, with everything around replacements, the auction and wanting to be picked, there was definitely a point to prove, and I think this performance helps settle that. I obviously feel I belong here, so putting in a performance for the team and for myself was important, but first and foremost it was about getting the team over the line. I’m very chill about the performance, and all the emotions before the auction make you stronger and bring you back even harder, and you can see that day by day. With the Janssen twins, there’s definitely a bit of competition; we had a chat this morning about game plans, so there’s some rivalry and something on the line between us, and we’ll see how it goes tonight.
Faf du Plessis | Joburg Super Kings skipper: I think especially Rilee and Wiaan (the way they batted), it was a bit tricky early on with the new ball, it was quite spicy up front, and the maturity they showed in their batting to hang in and build that partnership was crucial. They’re the reason we got to a decent total, although we were probably still 10 or 15 runs short considering how well they batted. That partnership was key for me. We also saw first-hand what the wickets can do when we were batting, so the plans were pretty straightforward - hit that hard length because it was difficult to score. I think being local players and being comfortable in familiar surroundings definitely helps, especially when you’re playing your first game in a competition like this, but the wicket still wasn’t a typical SuperSport Park wicket, so adapting to the conditions was the real key, and I thought our bowlers did that really well. It was a scrappy win, one of those games where we didn’t play our best, and it’s probably a match they should have won given the powerplay they had, but it was a real blue-collar, fighting, hard-working performance - our favourite kind of win.
Keshav Maharaj | Pretoria Capitals skipper: To start off, I think we gave maybe 10, 15 too much with the ball on a wicket that was a bit spicy. But having said that, we still brought it back really nicely by taking wickets at regular intervals, and then with the bat. So we had a really good foundation, and then sort of lost our way in the middle a little bit. So probably I identified that middle phase with the bat as where, you know, we could have been a lot better. I mean, it's not ideal in the middle phase of the game. Probably be a little bit more consistent with our length (talking about bowling). Bought a couple of soft balls in terms of stoppage and both the spin and the seam. So, you know, if we can be a little bit better and rectify that with a couple of balls, I think, you know, that score would look very different. It's a catch-22 situation at times, you know, it's something that we've also well upfront and quality. So, I have to hold it back at certain stages because you're also going to factor in bowling at the death and you can't throw all your eggs in the basket at the start. So, it's difficult at times, but I thought we did really well in the pitch. Obviously, it's the start of the game and the start of the competition. It's not ideal to start this way, but, it's good to get out all the cobwebs so that we get on ourselves and carry a bit of momentum into the next game. And the positives that we've done and build on the negatives.
16:37 local, 14:37 GMT, 20:07 IST: Super Kings have never made it to the finals in SA20 league, and in order to get there you need a lot of things to work in your favour. Winning the opening game is surely a right step in that direction. Chasing 169, the Capitals were 64/0 at the end of 8 overs and not many would have given Super Kings a chance to pull off a win from there. They desperately needed an opening. Akeal Hosein, who smashed a 10-ball 22, put his hand up with the ball and managed to get rid of Smeed and that wicket opened the floodgates as the Capitals lost 5 wickets for 18 runs. Barring the openers, the rest of the line-up found it tough to get going and struggled to cope with the two-paced nature of the surface. While some held on the pitch, some balls bounced awkwardly off the length. That said, the Capitals should have known better and needed one or two set batters for the slog overs. They impressed with the ball, but not so much with the bat today...

Richard Gleeson to Tymal Mills, out Caught by du Plessis!! What's a T20 league without Faf taking blinders? It was a juicy full toss alright and Mills gave it all on the heave. Skews off the thick inside half and it never looked like a catching opportunity until Faf ran from long-off and grabbed a stunner. He had to cover plenty of ground and then put in a late-minute dive to grab it cleanly. Tymal Mills c du Plessis b Richard Gleeson 7(6) [4s-1]
