SUMMARY

A compact opening batsman for South Africa in the 19th century, Louis Tancred was almost the ideal top order batsman. He had the temperament to grind out bowling units and once they got tired, he would pounce on them by smacking them to all parts of the ground. He was a clean striker of the ball and was particularly adept against quality fast bowling. Louis never had a Test ton in his career but crossed the three-figure mark 11 times in First-class cricket where he tallied over 5000 runs with 27 fifties to boot. He wasn't really an attractive batsman but got the job done through his methods at the crease. Having toured England multiple times with the South African team, he gradually became a popular face in the country. Illnesses did dog Louis during different times towards the end of his career. He also served during World War I but had to be removed on fitness grounds. Strangely, Louis developed depression from his cricketing career, so much so that he prevented his son from joining any kind of sport.
