A steady left-handed batsman and a nippy left-arm pacer, Don Smith was a fine all-rounder for Sussex after the war. Smith could move the ball both ways, he was also up to the challenge of opening the batting. Overall, Smith scored 16960 runs to go with 340 wickets in first-class cricket.

Smith played 3 Tests in 1957 but failed to deliver at the highest level. After his playing career, he went on to coach Sri Lanka in the late 1980s.
