One of the only two Irish-born players to have ever represented Australia, Tom Horan is a polished batsman who was primed for bigger things right from his club cricket days. Based in Victoria, he was rated as a batsman who could guts it out on pitches that were difficult to handle. He could also bowl effective medium pace, from a round-armish action. The 19th century was the earliest stages of international cricket and hence, Horan's numbers when viewed today don't tell the whole story. Aggressive by nature, he had a penchant for preferring the leg-side when it came to strokeplay. After his cricketing days, Horan took to the media, thereby becoming the first cricketer to enter the field. Horan went on to earn a solid reputation as a writer-journalist too. It won't actually be wrong to say that Horan's achievements in the media field comfortably outshone his days as a cricketer. He was eventually inducted into Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
