So, the Zimbabwe vs Pakistan encounter tomorrow becomes a fascinating one. Both England and Pakistan have already qualified. If Zimbabwe lose to Pakistan but still manage to improve their net run rate beyond Scotland’s, they will qualify. In the event of a no-result, Scotland will progress on the basis of a superior net run rate. With just six matches remaining before the Super Six stage, this tournament is only going to get better and better from here. Do remember to check this space for all the latest in cricket. Cheers!!
Thomas Rew | England skipper: It was a special innings from Mayes and unbelievable to watch. The partnership was outstanding and I’m really happy for both of them (Mayes and Moores). We don’t like to set too many targets as a batting group; we just go out there and bat and see where we are at the end. Once Moores gets going, he’s happy to carry on at the same tempo and target the short boundary. Managing the bowlers is about keeping spells short and saving energy for the back end, especially the death overs. We’ve got so many quality bowlers and I can turn to them whenever I need. We’ve had some practice in Bulawayo from the warm-ups, we’ll get there early, have a few nets and get used to the conditions, and hopefully take this momentum into the Super Sixes.
Thomas Knight | Scotland skipper: It was obviously a disappointing day. I think we missed the mark with the ball and in the field at times and we got punished by an outstanding innings from Ben Mayes, which was unbelievable. With the bat, we left a lot out there. We were aiming for around 250 to keep ourselves in the picture on net run rate and we fell well short of that. When a batter is going like that, it’s a nightmare from a captain’s point of view. It was an unbelievable innings from Mayes and Jo Moores, the strike rate up top was outstanding. We tried to go back to what we know and bowl our best balls, but we didn’t do it often enough and every time we missed, they punished us. It was a steep learning curve. With the bat, we had a few partnerships but couldn’t go on. It’s out of our hands now, but there are positives - some good spells with the ball and some good passages with the bat. The improvements are consistency with the ball and someone with the bat going big and making partnerships longer.
Ben Mayes | Player of the Match: I didn’t expect this when I woke up this morning, but it was good. I was helped a lot by Jo Moores, who batted brilliantly up top, and by others chipping in, including Rew and Caleb at the end. It was an all-round team performance. I think I've just tried to train as much as possible over the Christmas holidays when I could get away from school and, no excuses really, you know, this tournament I've played it instead. Yeah, just to tell that inspiration. We identified targeting the leg-side boundary from the first game as a team because of the strong wind in Zimbabwe and the short boundary on the same wicket. Playing senior men’s cricket with Hampshire has been crucial, helping me stay patient, and the older lads there have been very influential in my development as a cricketer.
16:57 local, 14:57 GMT, 20:27 IST: Scotland were no match for a dominant England side, who looked intent on playing a positive brand of cricket right from the start of the tournament. This was England’s third consecutive win, and the result ensured they finished top on Group C. Chasing a daunting target of 405, Scotland needed an aggressive start in the powerplay, but there was a clear lack of intent. Their task became even harder when both openers were dismissed off successive deliveries, and the slide continued as wickets fell at regular intervals. From a promising 38/0, Scotland collapsed to 87 for 7 in the span of 15 overs. There was some resistance from tailenders, but it merely delayed the inevitable as England sealed a comprehensive 252-run victory with 5 overs to spare. Stick around for the post-match reactions...
