PLAYER OF THE MATCH
So, it’s England, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe who qualify for the Super Six stage from Group C. Just three more games remain in the league stage, and let’s hope the weather stays clear for all of them. Until next time, cheers and goodbye!!
Farhan Yousaf | Pakistan skipper: Yes, the result is in our side, but we learned a lot of things for this match and (that will) help for the Super Six. Our bowlers are doing very well in this match and last match. Sometimes it misses, but hitting the right areas early on with the new ball is important. Sameer Minhas played really good in this match and we all need Sameer’s form for the Super 6, we need Sameer’s form as well and Usman played very well, Ahmed Hussain played very well, all the batters in good form, so we help together in Super 6. I already told that there’s a, I think, main and basic thing is to be the best fielding side in the World Cup and I know, I believe on my batting side, batting, bowling unit, but fielding is the mostly the strength of Pakistan.
Simbarashe Mudzengerere | Zimbabwe skipper: I learned that don’t give up in any situation. Anything is possible in the game of cricket. And just stay to the basics, you get your rewards. It really means a lot (to qualify for the Super Six stage) being the host country. You need to give something to the country. And most importantly, we’re looking to go through the Super Six and go to the quarterfinals. I thank you, everyone, for coming to support and those who are supporting from home. I feel it means a lot. Be there in Blawayo when we’re playing the Super Six. I think if we improve on our batting (talking about what they need to improve on for the next stage of the tournament), that’s the main issue right now. If we improve more on batting a little bit longer, we will succeed more in the Super Six.
Sameer Minhas | Player of the Match: Conditions were the same as normal. Actually, the plan got a little changed. We had to take the game a little longer. In the beginning, the ball wasn’t coming well on the bat. So I took some time and then adjusted to the conditions. No, it’s never a pressure game. I just stay normal, play my natural game and don’t take any pressure. It was quite important for me because in the beginning, in the first two matches, I didn’t score a big innings. So I’m well confident now. And this win was pretty important for us to go into the Super 6. Because going into the Super 6 with a win is a good confidence for the team. (Translated from Urdu).
Spare a thought for Scotland, though. They may have been encouraged by Pakistan scoring at six an over in the powerplay, but the tempo slowed dramatically thereafter. Their net run rate has now slipped below Zimbabwe’s, and as a result, Scotland have been knocked out of the tournament. Stick around for the post-match reactions...
15:03 local, 13:03 GMT, 18:33 IST: Zimbabwe endured a tough outing, but they will take some consolation from the fact that they managed to drag the game past the halfway mark. They needed the chase to extend beyond 25.1 overs to qualify for the Super Six stage, and at the 15-over mark, that seemed highly unlikely. Pakistan were cruising at 88 for 2, needing just 41 more runs. However, the run rate dipped sharply from that point, accompanied by a noticeable shift in Pakistan’s approach. Content to spend time in the middle, they adopted an overly cautious strategy, playing as many as 50 dot balls between overs 12 and 26. Sameer Minhas, who had shown promise with starts in the previous two games, went on to convert it into a well-compiled half-century, finishing the match in style with back-to-back sixes.
