Smith climbs up Ashes charts

13 Test hundreds for Steven Smith in the Ashes is now the second-most for anyone in the competition's history, only behind Don Bradman's 19. Jack Hobbs (12), Steve Waugh (10), Wally Hammond (9) and David Gower (9) follow the two in this list.

This was Smith's 37th Test hundred, taking him past Rahul Dravid (36), and now placing him only behind Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45), Ricky Ponting (41), Joe Root (41) and Kumar Sangakkara (38) for most tons in the format.

Smith's 13 hundreds against England are also the joint second-most for anyone against an opponent in Tests, alongside as many for Sunil Gavaskar against the West Indies and for Root against India, only behind Bradman's 19 in the Ashes.

3682 - Smith also went past Jack Hobbs' tally of 3636 runs to jump onto the second-spot for leading run-scorers in the Ashes.

Travis Head lights up SCG

7 - Travis Head became the fifth Australian to register Test hundreds at seven different home venues (the most) for anyone, alongside Steve Waugh, Matthew Hayden, Justin Langer and David Warner. Head now has four hundreds at the Adelaide Oval, two at The Gabba (Brisbane) and one each in Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart, Perth (Optus) and Sydney.

3 hundreds for Head in the series - all as an opener. He joined six other Australians to register three hundreds while opening in an Ashes series: Joe Darling in 1897/98, Bill Woodful in 1928/29, Arthur Morris in 1946/47 and 1948, Bill Lawry in 1965/66, Michael Slater in 1994/95 and 1998/99 and Matthew Hayden in 2002/03.

152 balls taken by Travis Head made it the joint fourth-fastest 150 in Ashes history, by balls taken.

2 - Late on Day 2, Head became just the second Australian opener to aggregate 500-plus runs in an Ashes series in the 21st century, after David Warner, who had totalled 523 at 58.11 during their 2013/14 clean-sweep. Head now has 600 runs from nine innings in the series, 579 from eight outings while opening the batting.

Tough outing for England bowlers

7 - Australia have had seven partnerships of 50 runs or more in their innings so far. That's the second-most 50-plus stands in a Test innings ever, after eight for India against England at The Oval in 2007.

It was the 22nd instance of there being a 50-plus partnership for each of the first five wickets in a Test innings, third in Ashes after Australia did that at The Oval in 2001 and at The Gabba in 2006/07.

Joe Root extends his Test supremacy

41 - Earlier on Day 2, Joe Root levelled with Ricky Ponting at the third spot for most Test hundreds (41), only behind Sachin Tendulkar (51) and Jacques Kallis (45). Root now needs another 1985 runs to go past Tendulkar's record tally of 15,921.

24 hundreds for Root in Tests since 2021, well clear of next best Smith (11) in the timeframe, followed by 10 each to Kane Williamson, Harry Brook, Shubman Gill and Head. Root's conversion rate from 50-plus scores to hundreds reads 58.53% since 2021, a massive upgrade from 25.75% from his debut until 2020.

17 scores of 150 or more for Root in Tests, a number only exceeded by Tendulkar (20), Brian Lara (19), Kumar Sangakkara (19), and Bradman (18). The next most for England is 11 by Alastair Cook. Root now has 150-plus Test scores in seven different countries, the second-most alongside Steve Waugh, Lara and Sangakkara and only one less than Tendulkar and Younis Khan (eight each).

77 wickets for Ben Stokes while leading England in Tests, the joint-most for an England captain alongside as many for Bob Willis in 18 games, followed by 51 for Ray Illingworth.
